Shikumen in Shanghai

Shikumen is a typical Shanghainese residential building style. It is a combination of Jiangnan (south of Yangtze River) and colonial terraced house. There are still found in the Shanghai Old City, and the former French concession area in Shanghai. Xiantiandi and Tianzifang are typical examples of these Shikumen.

Red tile roof, gray brick walls and arcades are typical in Shikumen building. Their heavy wooden doors are decorated with bronze door knobs. A closer look at the lintel and windows, you will find western influence and patterns.
